Parents must keep the following records in accordance with state law.

Plan Book
A plan book is the documented record of your child's learning. These may be kept by day, week, or month as you choose. You can make your own plan book or buy one from any number of resources, including local business or teacher supply stores. The plan book should reflect records for each child in each of the required academic areas of reading, writing, math, science, and history (in 7th-12th grades, literature and composition in lieu of reading and writing).

Some plan books have been designed especially for homeschoolers. These planners have less space devoted to traditional school details and more space devoted to homeschool needs (extra pages for an extended school year, space on each page for notes, and record pages for reading lists and field trips).

A diary or other record keeping tool like homeschool tracker will also fill this requirement. You may keep a diary or journal of your childs learning. Blogging is an online diary of sorts many homeschoolers are finding this is a great way to document their children's learning.

Portfolio
A portfolio is a folder or notebook containing samples of your child's work in (at minimum) the five required academic areas of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. It can be as detailed or simple as you choose. Items which might be included are: written reports/essays; photographs or science fair or art projects; reading lists; certificates or awards; field trip log including family travel; photographs of the child engaged in an activity (music, sports, science lab, living history visits, speech, theater, club meeting, or social event); and ticket stubs and brochures from museums, zoos and parks.

Progress Report
A progress report is a summary of the child's progress, and it can be done in different ways. The simplest way is to write a couple of sentences giving specific information about the child's progress in each "subject." Assessing progress is easily done by observing, interacting with, and talking with your child.
