School's Out Support has been around since April of 2001 as an online
support group ever since a small group of Columbia unschooling moms
decided to break away from the inclusive group of curriculum-pushers.
They got together to start what was then called Palmetto State School's
Out Support to support and empower unschooling families in South
Carolina.
We've grown up a lot since those early days! We're now a statewide
organization of unschooling families with lots to offer you to help you
and your family on its unschooling adventure:
The SOS Legal/Legislative Committee monitors legislation and other
state activities which might affect homeschooling in South Carolina.
SOS's legislative advocate in Columbia keeps legislators and
bureaucrats informed of SOS's positions and interests and keeps SOS
members up to date on any potential changes.
The SOS Website contains information about SOS, including its history
and current board of directors, the state's legal statutes with
explanations, a list of local contacts, a current list of state and
inter/national unschooling support groups, and information on
resources, both online and off.
SOS local contacts can be reached in three areas of the state:
Piedmont, Midlands, and LowCountry. These are SOS members and “experienced unschoolers“ who volunteer to answer questions from
homeschoolers or prospective homeschoolers in their areas. They can give
advice and information about local support groups and activities as
well as general moral support.
SOS was the original host of and has been a long-time sponsor of the
Live and Learn Unschooling Conferences, at which unschoolers gather
together to hear interesting and inspirational speakers, participate in
Funshops, and most of all, meet and share ideas and experience joyful
unschoolers of all ages.
SOS Gatherings offer low-key, fun opportunities to spend time with
other unschooling families from around the state, at group campsites in
state parks, at local museums, or in private homes.
