About the Director

Kelly Lovejoy and her husband took a sharp left turn six years ago when they pulled their then 13 year old son, Cameron, from a private college preparatory school and decided to UNschool him. Their lives changed drastically and for the better.

Within the first year of unschooling, Kelly and fellow unschooling mom, Melinda Nolan, started School's Out Support (SOS), an online, state-wide support group for unschoolers in South Carolina. They were surprised at the number of unschoolers lurking around the state. Since 2001, SOS has been a strong voice of unschooling within South Carolina.

Later that year, Kelly had the idea of hosting a small, regional unschooling conference in Columbia, so she founded the Live and Learn
Unschooling Conference http://www.LiveandLearnConference.org. Surprisingly, folks showed up from around the country and Canada.
Unschoolers were hungry to connect with fellow unschoolers. In six years, the conference has grown to over 550 attendees from over 40 states and five countries. It has travelled around the country from Columbia to Boston, St Louis, and Albuquerque. It's settling back in the area in 2007 when it will find its permanent home near Asheville, NC.

As an unschooler, Kelly was interested in finding a reputable and responsible accountability association in South Carolina that was 1) secular, 2) minimally-invasive, and 3) had NO ties to H$LDA. In November of 2006, Kelly founded School's Out Support Accountability Association to meet that need for herself and other unschoolers/relaxed homeschoolers.

Kelly enjoys hanging with her husband and children and pets. She has many and varied interests and knows there are not enough hours in the day, days in the year, and years in her life to do everything she wants to do, but she's trying anyway! She seeks joy in every day.
